State Legislature Stands Up for Rights of New York Families
The New York State Assembly today passed a bill outlawing discrimination against parents in the workplace. The New York Civil Liberties applauds the Assembly and bill sponsor Assemblymember Addie Russell in their effort to put the rights of New York families first.
The New York State Assembly today passed a bill outlawing discrimination against parents in the workplace. The New York Civil Liberties applauds the Assembly and bill sponsor Assemblymember Addie Russell in their effort to put the rights of New York families first.
“Up until now, state law protected only against discrimination for being a parent in housing and credit, but not employment,” said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. “Today’s action ensures that having a family is not held against workers, and that performance not parenthood is used to determine a hire or promotion. This legislation is an important step in supporting the rights and stability of all of New York’s families.”
The bill passed the Senate in January and is expected to be signed into law by the governor later this year.
