A Call for Justice: Rally in Washington for Reform

The New York Times ran an editorial yesterday that toasted Irish-Americans on St. Patrick’s Day by reminding readers that the Irish, like nearly everyone else, “were Mexicans once. That is: the new immigrants, poor and reviled, propelled by hope and hunger into America’s prickly embrace.”

Aside from demonstrating the editorial writer’s flare for alliteration, this last sentence expresses a sad truth: Despite its reputation as the land of opportunity, America has never been particularly welcoming to those who come here seeking a better life.

Immigrants have always face hatred, discrimination and exploitation. This was the case when the Irish immigrated here in mid-19th century and it remains the case today. It’s why passing comprehensive immigration reform is so important.

This Sunday, advocates from across the country will descend on Washington, D.C. to rally for reform. It’s an excellent opportunity to show President Obama and congressional leaders that the situation is too dire to ignore. They must adopt practical solutions to fix our immigration system and uphold our nation’s core values.

The NYCLU will be there in force. We’ll be sending busloads of people from across the state to join the historic march. We hope to see you there!
