GAME ON – At Vegas Rally Reid Promises Immigration Reform Bill This Summer

Big immigration reform news over the weekend—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid came out boldly in favor of passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill this summer.

In no uncertain terms, Senator Reid told the crowd of nearly 10,000 on that had gathered in Las Vegas for an immigration reform rally on Saturday that rumors of immigration reform’s death in Congress have been greatly exaggerated.

Roll Call has it:

“We are going to pass comprehensive immigration reform,” Reid told the crowd of thousands Saturday. “We need to do this this year. We can’t let excuses like a Supreme Court nomination get in the way.”

Reid promised his constituents that legislation would include provisions to secure the nation’s borders, a guest-worker program and a path to legalization for immigrants who are already in the country illegally. “There are no excuses. This is something America needs,” he said. “We’re going to do immigration reform just like we did health care reform.”

Facing his own Senate re-election this Fall in Nevada—a state whose population is more than 20 percent Latino—Reid is working to put immigration reform on the fast track to passage. At the rally, Reid reported he had 56 Democratic senators committed to passing reform and called on “a handful of Republicans” to join him in the cause.

Reid promised to begin work on immigration reform as soon as Congress returned from recess next week.

Let’s make sure New York’s representatives have a nice stack of messages in support of reform when they get back from vacation.

Game. On.
