Mr. President, Support Workable Reform, Reject National Worker ID

Following a White House meeting last week with Senators Schumer and Graham, President Obama declared his “unwavering” commitment to comprehensive immigration reform.

Schumer and Graham gave the president a three-page framework of their legislative plan for reform, including a proposal to establish a national worker ID card.

The president hasn’t yet stated his position on this misguided proposal. If he’s truly serious about achieving workable immigration reform this year, he should reject the ID plan.

We doubt the president reads the Watertown Daily Times, but if he did, this letter by NYCLU Statewide Advocacy Coordinator Ari Rosmarin would be worth his time. It makes a strong case against Schumer’s worker ID plan.

We need to let Senator Schumer know that while we appreciate his leadership on immigration reform, his ID plan is a bad deal all around.

Please don’t be shy about sharing your concerns with him.
