President Obama Says Immigration Reform is Next!

Big news out of Washington this week as multiple media reports are describing a newfound enthusiasm for immigration reform from President Obama.

(Yes, we’ve been led down this path before—but this one could have legs. Don’t be such a cynic!)

Following on the heels of Senator Harry Reid’s April 10 speech in Las Vegas pledging immigration reform this year, the Wall Street Journal has a story today outlining a conversation the president had yesterday with newly-elected Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown encouraging him to support immigration reform efforts.

According to a story in The Hill’s blog Briefing Room, Obama told Brown that immigration reform is next on the agenda and that he will be pushing for a bill introduction soon.

And while Senator Brown is not committing to supporting reform yet, this sign of new life on the issue by the president is great news.

But why the sudden energy from the White House?

It could have something to do with Representative Luis Gutierrez’s warning to the president that Latino voters will stay home this November if the president does not live up to his campaign promise to make a strong push for comprehensive immigration reform, according to a fascinating piece in The Hill yesterday.

Whatever the reason, we’ll take it.

If you haven’t gotten in touch with your senators or representatives lately (read: this week), pick up the phone and give them a call or click off some faxes. MAKE IT HAPPEN.
