President Obama: We need more than that.

President Obama just wrapped up the first State of the Union speech of his presidency. Finally, he had a platform worthy of announcing his plans for a sweeping, comprehensive overhaul of our immigration system that would be fair and humane.

Just like he said he would during the campaign, right?

Not really.

“And we should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system – to secure our borders and enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”
Thirty-eight words. Out of nearly 7,600. A nice start, but that’s not going to cut it. Even President George W. Bush routinely said more about immigration reform in his State of the Union speeches than Obama.

We know the White House supports comprehensive immigration reform and its agencies have been working on plans for month, but this address should remind us that we have loads of work to do.

Phone calls. Letters. Faxes. Demonstrations. Op-eds. Letters to the Editor. Public meetings. Town Halls.

All of it.

So let’s go.
