Senator Schumer! Where’s Our Immigration Reform?

Long Island is one of our country’s prime examples of why we need comprehensive immigration reform NOW! With ICE raids, discriminatory county and local laws, hate crimes against immigrants, and public officials who openly speak out about their disdain for immigrants, we’ve suffered enough pain and division in our communities because Congress continues to fail to act on this most important civil rights issue.

Today, about 50 Long Islanders rallied in front of Senator Charles Schumer’s Long Island office in Melville to demand that the senator unveil his long anticipated bill on immigration reform [See photos]. The rally was organized by the NYCLU and its partners in the Long Island Immigrant Alliance, and was the first of a series planned around Long Island into the spring (watch our calendar for upcoming rally dates).

The message was one of support, showing Senator Schumer that residents of Long Island are behind him and that we are hopeful he’ll find republicans to co-sponsor the bill.

Senator Schumer’s Long Island regional director, Gerry Petrella, did come out to address the crowd of rallyers and assured us that immigration reform is “very important” to the senator and that the senator is still trying to build bipartisan support. Rallyers then hand-delivered to Mr. Petrella more than 500 postcards from constituents who support immigration reform.
