Stop-and-Frisk Database

The NYPD is legally mandated to report stop-and-frisk data each quarter to the New York City Council. Annual reports are posted in electronic files on the NYPD website but are only downloadable in a portable document, which is difficult to open and analyze.

Click here to download a compressed (.zip) CSV file of the 2010 database. This file is easily imported into most statistical packages, including the freeware R. It contains 99 variables and 601,285 observations, each of which represents a stop conducted by an NYPD officer. Variables include race, gender and age of the person stopped as well as the location, time and date of the stop.
