We Came, We Saw, We Chanted…

The NYCLU was proud to be part of the hundreds of thousands that came from across the country to Washington yesterday to demand the passage of comprehensive immigration reform this year (see NYT story).

What is there to say about the march? Basically, three words: IT. WAS. HUGE.

With representation from California, Florida, Texas and Illinois, the rally was by far the biggest in Washington since Obama’s inauguration. And with some travelling nearly 12 hours to be there, the NYCLU was powerfully represented with staff and activists from Buffalo to Long Island and everywhere in between (see more NYCLU photos from the march on our Flickr page).

Coming on the same day as the historic House vote for health care reform, most members of Congress were in town to see the massive display of energy behind immigration reform. The speakers’ line-up included a laundry list of representatives and senators, and community, faith and labor leaders from across the country. Even President Obama delivered a videotaped address to the rally (see the YouTube video of his address).

The rally was a much-needed injection of enthusiasm into the fight for immigration reform. And we’re not letting up yet!
