Attend the New York Premiere of the film USA vs Al-Arian

Sami Al-Arian -- a passionate, outspoken pro-Palestinian activist and university professor -- was charged in 2003 with funding and supporting a Palestinian terrorist group and held in prison awaiting a trial for two-and-a-half years. USA vs Al-Arian is an intimate family portrait that documents the strain brought on by Al-Arian's trial, a battle waged both in court and in the media. A tight-knit family unravels before our eyes as trial preparations, strategy and spin consume their lives. This is a nightmare come to life, as a man is prosecuted for his beliefs rather than his actions. Director Line Halvorsen presents democracy in a new light in a post-9/11 culture of fear, when "security measures" trump free speech and punishment is meted out in the name of protection.

Oppose Government SpyingThe House of Representatives passed an unprecedented wiretapping bill that grants sweeping new spying powers to the President and leaves little court oversight to protect privacy rights.

This bill, if passed by the Senate and signed by the President, will have very serious implications for civil liberties, privacy, and our system of checks and balances.

As part of the NYCLU continuing Civil Liberties Discussion Series, Danielle Tully of the ACLU’s National Security Project will discuss the civil liberties issues at play and the ACLU and NYCLU’s objections to the President’s wiretapping plan.

Last month, in the landmark District of Columbia vs. Heller case, the Supreme Court decided for the first time that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm for private use.

Until Heller, the court held — and the ACLU agreed — that the Second Amendment protects a collective right that applies only to state-regulated militias.

Which interpretation is correct?

Join the NYCLU’s continuing Civil Liberties Discussion Series for an intriguing conversation between NYCLU Legal Director Arthur Eisenberg, Reason Magazine Associate Editor Damon Root and Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Walter Olson about the intersection of civil liberties and guns. Should individuals have the right to bear arms? If so, is this a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution?
