NYCLU | Issues

The right of every person to vote is one of the most fundamental pillars of American society. The NYCLU has been a leader in the fight to actualize and protect every citizen’s ability to exercise this basic constitutional right in New York State.

On November 4, 2008, voters will go to the polls to cast their votes not only for president of the United States, but also for Congress and the New York State Assembly. The NYCLU encourages New York voters to be prepared on election day by watching this video on safe voting and checking the New York State Board of Elections website for registration status, polling places and times, and state rules. Voters can also download NYCLU's voter empowerment card and take it to the polls with them.

Thousands of New Yorkers registered to vote for the first time this year, and some voters may not have received their voter registration material by mail. If you sent in your registration by October 10, 2008, you can vote on November 4. If you have any trouble voting, NYCLU stands ready to assist New Yorkers as they cast their ballots. Just call us at 212-607-3300 or contact the Election Protection Hotline toll free at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683).
