National Security and Civil Liberties

Since September 11th, 2001, the government has attacked many fundamental rights and liberties through legislation, executive orders, regulations, and court rulings, all in the name of fighting terrorism. We have witnessed troubling crackdowns on dissent, privacy rights, due process rights, human rights, immigrant rights, and a host of other basic constitutional protections. These actions by the government will position the post-9/11 era as one of the darkest periods for civil liberties in United States history.

The NYCLU has been active in fighting back against the onslaught of post-9/11 government civil liberties violations. Through aggressive public education, coalition-building, rallying, and lobbying on the local and federal levels, NYCLU staff and volunteers have worked together to successfully expose government abuses and advocate for the restoration and strengthening of civil rights and liberties.

Volunteers can get involved at any time with local NYCLU offices to get active in the movement to defend and promote civil liberties. We are working regularly on lobbying elected officials, putting on forums, panels, and discussions, hosting rallies and generating letter-writing campaigns, and more. Please join with the NYCLU in our fight to combat some of the worst government abuses of power in recent years.
