NYCLU: NY Lawmakers Must Reject Proposal to Defund Planned Parenthood

Legislation pending in the State Assembly would cut state funding for birth control, life-saving cancer screening, pregnancy tests, HIV testing and counseling services. The bill, A.7841, would amend state law to deny state funding to Planned Parenthood or any organization that performs abortions. Legislation pending in the State Assembly would cut state funding for birth control, life-saving cancer screening, pregnancy tests, HIV testing and counseling services.

The bill, A.7841, would amend state law to deny state funding to Planned Parenthood or any organization that performs abortions.

The following statement is attributable to Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union:

“State lawmakers should be expanding New Yorkers’ access to health care, not restricting it. This destructive legislation would jeopardize the health of hundreds of thousands of women, men and teens who rely on Planned Parents and similar organizations for crucial health care services, including pregnancy tests, cancer screenings and testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. For many low-income, uninsured or underinsured people, Planned Parenthood is a primary health care provider.

“New York has a proud history as a national leader in protecting women’s health and respecting their right to control their reproductive destiny. We expect our lawmakers to act in a manner consistent with that history and reject this outrageous proposal.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
