Real ID in New York State

State Senator Eric Schneiderman discusses strategies to defeat REAL ID.

A rapidly growing coalition of organizations representing a wide range of issues and political beliefs is working to prevent implementation of the Real ID Act in New York State. The coalition, New York Alliance Against the Real ID Act, urges state and federal lawmakers to support American values and reject the Real ID Act. The Alliance includes liberals and conservatives, labor unions, religious groups, civil rights organizations, 9/11 family members, Jewish organizations, gun rights groups, and voting rights organizations, among others. The coalition's work involves community organizing and education to raise awareness and mobilize the public, and legislative advocacy to persuade state and federal lawmakers and officials, including Governor Paterson, to support anti-Real ID legislation.

Bills have been introduced in both the State Assembly and State Senate urging New York’s Congressional delegation to support the repeal of the Real ID Act. Eighteen states across the country have passed bipartisan legislation opposing the law. Bills have been introduced in both houses of Congress to repeal the Real ID Act. We must send state and federal lawmakers a clear message: The Real ID Act runs counter to American values and must be rejected.
