NYCLU Senior Staff Attorney Position

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with six chapters and 48,000 members statewide.

Summary of Position

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), which is the New York State affiliate of the ACLU, is seeking applicants for a senior staff attorney position in its New York City office. The attorney hired into this position will have primary responsibility for a wide range of civil-liberties litigation and advocacy and may have supervisory responsibility for other members of the NYCLU’s Legal Department.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • At least five years of experience as a full-time attorney engaged in litigation;
  • A demonstrated commitment to civil-rights or civil-liberties advocacy;
  • A demonstrated ability to advocate effectively, including strong writing and oral advocacy skills as well as a demonstrated ability to initiate and complete successful advocacy;
  • Admission to the Bar of New York or the ability to take and pass the New York State Bar examination scheduled for March 2007.

In addition to meeting those meeting qualifications, the NYCLU is particularly seeking candidates with experience or expertise in criminal justice, immigration, education, LGBT rights, or race-and-poverty advocacy. Successful supervisory experience is also a plus.
