Enacted in 1966, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal law that establishes the public's right to obtain information from federal government agencies.

The Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) is a New York state law that establishes similar rights regarding New York state agencies.

Any person or organization can file a FOIA or FOIL request.
