Civil Liberties Discussion Series: Reproductive Rights in New York
The NYCLU Civil Liberties Discussion Series takes place from 7 – 8:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Each session consists of two parts: a guest speaker and open discussion.
This month's discussion focuses on reproductive rights in New York.
As President Bush has stocked our courts with conservative judges and the federal government continues to erode protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade, we must take action to modernize our reproductive rights laws — laws that have not been updated since 1970 — in a way that will ensure healthy futures for us, our sisters, our daughters and for the next generations of New Yorkers.
The NYCLU has been at the forefront of a statewide movement, backed by Governor Spitzer and many state legislators, to enact the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act — a bill that guarantees women the ability to make their own decisions about whether and when to become pregnant.
In honor of Women’s History Month, the NYCLU’s Civil Liberties Discussion Series will focus on reproductive rights in New York. Join us on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in our offices at 125 Broad Street, 19th Floor.
Galen Sherwin, director of the NYCLU’s Reproductive Rights Project, will discuss the current state of abortion rights in New York and how we are fighting to ensure that New York continues to protect and respect a woman’s ability to make private reproductive health care decisions.
Following the presentations, NYCLU staff will lead a discussion with the speakers and attendees. Pizza and drinks will be provided to get the discussion going.
