NYCLU: Rockefeller Drug Laws Cause Racial Disparities, Huge Taxpayer Burden [0] (May 8, 2008)

At a legislative hearing held today in Manhattan, the New York Civil Liberties Union presented testimony illustrating the stark racial disparities and enormous financial burden generated by the Rockefeller Drug Laws in New York City.


NYCLU to Announce Lawsuit Today Over NYPD Racial Profiling [0] (May 7, 2008)

The New York Civil Liberties Union will announce a lawsuit at 1 p.m. today on behalf of someone who was the subject of the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk program. The lawsuit challenges the racially-biased practice as well as the legality of a database the NYPD maintains with the names and addresses of every person stopped and frisked by the police, even though more than 90 percent of those people have done nothing wrong.

The New York Civil Liberties Union today filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of a New York Post crime reporter who was the victim of racial profiling by NYPD officers.

NYC Marijuana Possession Arrests Skyrocket, Illustrate NYPD Racial Bias, New Report Shows [0] (April 29, 2008)

The NYPD arrested and jailed nearly 400,000 people for possessing small amounts of marijuana between 1997 and 2007, a tenfold increase in marijuana arrests over the previous decade and a figure marked by startling racial and gender disparities, according to a report released Tuesday at the New York Civil Liberties Union.


NYCLU, ACLU Urge Federal Appeals Court To Lift Ban On Renowned Scholar [0] (April 28, 2008)

The American Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a brief in a federal court today in an appeal challenging the government’s refusal to grant a visa to renowned Swiss scholar Tariq Ramadan. The ACLU maintains that the government’s stated reason for barring the scholar is a pretext and that Ramadan, a leading European academic whose work addresses Muslim identity and the role of Islam in democratic societies, remains banned from the country because of his political viewpoints.


NYCLU to Release Report Revealing Racial Bias in New York City Marijuana Arrests [0] (April 28, 2008)

Tomorrow, the New York Civil Liberties Union will release a detailed 106-page report that analyzes the NYPD’s marijuana arrest practices. The report, an examination of the role race plays in police work, comes just days after three detectives were acquitted for shooting an unarmed Sean Bell.
