Protecting Protest and Fighting Censorship
The NYCLU has long been a leader across the State in defending the rights of New Yorkers to exercise their rights to speak and protest freely. The right to protest has a long history and tradition in New York and the NYCLU has played a critical role in preserving and strengthening that tradition. Whether street marches, stationary rallies, local pickets, petitioning, or leafleting, the NYCLU believes the right to protest is fundamental to the healthy functioning of a democracy and has worked continually to promote New Yorkers’ understanding of their rights and to ensure that those rights are never abridged.
NYCLU staff and volunteers have always been very active in protecting protest rights through the distribution of public education materials, conducting Know Your Rights to Protest trainings, monitoring police activities at demonstrations statewide, promoting controversial book readings, and working with police departments to ensure safe and free protest activity.
