Youth Shine At Fifth Annual First Amendment Film Fest

The Genesee Valley Chapter of the NYCLU screened 48 student film projects at its Fifth Annual First Amendment Film Festival held at the Little Theater in Rochester on Sunday, June 13. Many of the participants and their families joined local members for a celebration of free speech, free assembly, free religion, free press and free petitioning with free popcorn and free soda. Awards in four categories and three honorable mentions were presented.

Winners at Genesee Valley Chapter's Fifth Annual First Amendment Film Fest

Cebrahil Guler-Carrasquillo is a senior at Wilson Magnet High School in Rochester. His Best Public Service Announcement used a strong personal voice and references to a recent pop tune to present his feelings about free speech.

Matthew Taylor is also a senior at Wilson Magnet and used great writing to warn against the many threats to free speech, earning him the Best Message award.

Angelica Ritter is a sophomore at The Norman Howard School in Rochester. She presented a quick survey of free speech throughout the history of Western thought to win the Best Long Form award.

Skylar Munger is also a sophomore at Norman Howard and won the Most Creative award with a look at free speech through its everyday use on bumper stickers.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Ashley Watson of Wilson Magnet, and to Corey Maddock and Rachel Broadhurst of the Norman Howard School.
