Hundreds of Students Study their Rights at Youth Liberty Conference
Keynote speaker Jamia Wilson
The Genesee Valley Chapter held the third biennial Youth Liberty Conference on Friday, Oct. 15 at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford. The theme for this conference was "We the Students," which emphasized students' First and Fourth Amendment rights.
Keynote speaker Ms. Jamia Wilson, vice president of Programs at the Women's Media Center based in New York City, kicked off the day by engaging the high school students with stories of how the First Amendment gave her the ability to pursue her advocacy work on behalf of women in the media.

After Jamia's talk, the students broke into small discussion groups facilitated by more than 20 volunteers. Their discussions were open to all aspects of the First Amendment and to their rights under the Fourth Amendment. The small group format provided an intimate atmosphere in which students were able to talk openly about their experiences and understandings of these basic protections.
The conference was videotaped by staff members from the Western Regional Office in Buffalo. Central office staff members are using that raw footage to create a video that will be coming soon to the NYCLU website.
This conference is the centerpiece of our chapter's programming. The event ensures that we play a role in passing on to the next generation an appreciation of our core values – the freedoms of speech, religion and privacy.
Without your support, these youth conferences could not happen. All of us here at the chapter thank you.
