Drawing the Lines: A Public Forum on Redistricting in Monroe County and Beyond
New York State’s electoral boundaries will be redrawn this year. Sure, it’s not the sexiest topic, but it’s a critically important one as it will determine how you’re represented in Albany and Washington.
For decades, drawing electoral districts has been a political parlor game, as incumbent lawmakers carved up turf to suit their interests (and their reelection prospects). Governor Cuomo has introduced legislation to create an independent commission to redraw the legislative boundaries, but some key players in Albany are pushing back.
To learn more about this debate, join a distinguished panel of guests on Monday, March 28, in a lively discussion sponsored by the NYCLU’s Genesee Valley Chapter and the Western New York Chapter of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy.
We’ll explore the nuts and bolts of redistricting – from its history to how to bring integrity, neutrality and accountability to the process. We’ll talk about how an independent commission might work, and assess what is next for Monroe County and New York State.
Panelists include:
• Frank Housh, Esq.: co-chair of the WNY Chapter of the American Constitution Society
• Katherine Smith: President, League of Women Voters of the Rochester Metropolitan Area
• Hon. Vincent Esposito: Deputy Minority Leader, Monroe County Legislature
• Scott Forsyth, Esq.: Legal Counsel to the Genesee Valley Chapter of the NYCLU
The discussion will take place on Monday, March 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 N. Fitzhugh St. in Rochester.
