Police Brutality

Investigation is the first step in dealing with the problem of police brutality and other misconduct. We must document the different forms of police misconduct and identify the most serious problem areas. You can help.

The Lower Hudson Valley Chapter is collecting data on the misuse of police power in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Each county contains several law enforcement agencies, including city, town and village police forces and county sheriffs departments, as well as local barracks of the state police. It is very important, as we gather information, to identify as precisely as possible the department and the individual responsible for the abuse.

If you have information about police misconduct, we need to hear from you, and we need the details.

Please contact the chapter office (in writing) at:

New York Civil Liberties Union
Lower Hudson Valley Chapter
297 Knollwood Rd., Suite 217
White Plains, New York 10607

Mark the envelope: “Special Attention — Linda Berns, chapter director.”

Include your name, address and phone number so that we can contact you if we need further information. Your name will not be disclosed unless you agree to do so.

Tell us the date, location, police department, names or shield numbers of officers involved -- if shields were removed or covered, include that information. Provide the name of the person or persons who were the victims of the abuse. If you do not have names, provide a detailed description of the victim. Then tell us what happened. If you know whether the victim was arrested or taken to an emergency room, please tell us. If there are newspaper clippings, even if they have the story completely wrong, please send us copies.
