Derrick Utley
Derrick Utley (he/him) is a Communications Strategist for the New York Civil Liberties Union where he focuses on developing and executing media and communications plans on police transparency and accountability, criminal legal reform, reproductive freedom, transgender rights, and racial, economic, and environmental justice.
Prior to joining the NYCLU, Derrick worked for members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, most recently serving as Communications Director for Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. His work has appeared in local and national outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. He has also worked in communications and campaign roles for elected officials representing New York City at both the city and federal levels. Beyond his political work, he volunteered as a Lifeline Counselor at The Trevor Project, providing crisis support to LGBTQ+ young people.
