Wafa Junaid

Wafa Junaid is a Staff Attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union. Prior to joining the NYCLU, she was a Skadden Fellow at the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, where she worked on preemption challenges to state laws criminalizing federal immigration violations and litigated challenges to prolonged detention. Her work also included opposing efforts by the Trump administration to undermine birthright citizenship and to transfer noncitizens from U.S. detention facilities to Guantánamo Bay without access to counsel. In law school, she worked on wrongful conviction cases at the MacArthur Justice Center and assisted in representing indigent clients at the Federal Defender Program. Wafa earned her J.D. from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and her B.A. in Public Policy from New York University.
