Stephanie J. Ball joined the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) in March 2019 as the inaugural Legal Department Manager. As the Legal Manager, she strengthens operational aspects of the department as they relate to hiring and supervision of lawyers, legal fellows, paralegals, and summer interns; professional development (including training and continuing legal education (CLE); case assignments and workload management; case tracking systems; Legal Department policies and procedures; legal resources (including Westlaw and library materials); conflict-checks system, and malpractice insurance.
Stephanie is an award-winning developer and presenter of numerous CLE programs for law firms, bar associations, law schools, in-house corporate counsels and business and financial institutions. She teaches lawyers what they don’t learn in law school to be successful in the practice and business of law.
Stephanie has authored articles published in the New York Law Journal, the National Law Journal, American Bar Association Law Practice Today and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association on achieving equality for women and minority attorneys in the legal profession. She developed and presented a diversity and inclusion CLE program based on the New York State Bar Association’s report IF NOT NOW, WHEN? Achieving Equality for Women Attorneys in the Courtroom and ADR. Along with Sharon Porcellio, one of the authors of the report, they have presented this program live and by webinar to attorneys nationwide.
Stephanie is a long-time member of ACLEA, the network of CLE professionals worldwide, NALP, an association of over 2,500 legal career professionals who advise law students, lawyers, law offices, and law schools in North America and beyond and the Professional Development Consortium (PDC) professionals who are responsible for developing and administrating training and continuing professional development for lawyers. Stephanie has been an invited guest speaker at the annual conferences for these professional organizations worldwide.
Prior to joining the NYCLU, Stephanie was the Director of Professional Development, Recruiting and Continuing Legal Education and Law Library Director for Am Law 200 law firms. Stephanie holds a JD from Southern California Institute of Law where she graduated first in her class. Stephanie also graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a BS in Fashion Business Management. Stephanie also holds a degree in Library Information Technology from Cuesta College.
