Police officers wield enormous power to detain, search, arrest, and use force. Yet too often, officers who abuse New Yorkers are not held accountable for their misconduct. Police departments across the state are shrouded in near-total secrecy, with basic information about how they work and what they have done hidden from public view. The job of police is to serve New Yorkers, not operate with impunity.

The NYCLU is committed to holding officers accountable and to making departments fairer and more transparent.
