In the Trump Era, protest is crucial. New Yorkers have taken to the streets to protest family separation, mistreatment of refugees, the rollback women’s rights, police abuse and much more. Yet government has too often interfered with New Yorkers’ right to protest, from police spying on protestors or arresting New Yorkers for lawful demonstrations, to barriers like municipal protest fees.
The NYCLU fights unlawful surveillance of protestors, educates New Yorkers on their rights when they take to the streets, monitors the police management of protests, and takes on unfair bureaucratic obstacles to lawful assembly.
