It’s the job of local and state police and sheriffs to serve everyone in their communities, not to do the bidding of federal immigration enforcement. In fact, New York state law prohibits local law enforcement from detainng people at the request of ICE, but some departments have elected to take up the Trump administration’s cruel deportation agenda, breaking trust with immigrant New Yorkers, and sowing fear that asking for help or offering information could put immigrants at risk. Without community trust, police can’t do their jobs as effectively.

The NYCLU works with communities across the state to demand public officials work for all New Yorkers, and that local law enforcement rejects the Trump administration’s divisive deportation agenda.
