The Development Team 
The NYCLU Development Department seeks to secure the financial resources necessary to support the NYCLU’s mission, strategic plan, and work plan. We engage and partner with our members as well as individual and institutional philanthropists. Within the NYCLU, we work closely with other departments on donor messaging and communications to promote brand awareness and educate stakeholders who are concerned with advancing civil liberties and civil rights in New York and the United States. We are a results- and values-driven team with professional and committed members who respect each other and our donor-partners. 


The NYCLU seeks well-qualified candidates for the full-time position of Development Assistant who would be dedicated to our mission and values. The Development Assistant’s purpose is to ensure the development staff have the support and resources they need so that projects run on time and efficiently and the team is communicating effectively.  



The Development Assistant will undertake a range of tasks and responsibilities that facilitate and coordinate the activities of development staff, including:
  • Assist with exciting ACLU/NYCLU cultivation and fundraising events including the LGBT Rights Cocktail Party, Broadway Stands Up for Freedom concert and the NYC Marathon;
  • Coordinate essential cultivation, invitation, and fundraising mailings, including on-time execution, donor list review by portfolio managers and work with printer and mail house;
  • Assist with donor and corporate sponsor communications;
  • Maintain department calendar and assist with scheduling;
  • Facilitate team bonding and cohesion through activities such as ice breakers, celebrations, field trips and retreats;
  • Assist in planning and facilitating internal and external meetings, including taking notes and meeting set up; 
  • Create annual department workplan overviews and support staff in creating project workplans; Maintain workplans in Asana (project management software); 
  • Execute e-blasts through Constant Contact;
  • Organize and maintain electronic and hard-copy files;
  • Work with Finance Department to reconcile department expenses and request payments;
  • Manage inventory and distribution of department’s public materials;
  • Assist with running and manipulating donor reports and processing gifts and acknowledgments; 
  • Work with other departments on specific projects, as assigned;
  • Additional responsibilities as needed. 


  • Minimum one year experience as an administrative or executive assistant, or related
  • Committed to developing and maintaining effective relationships with others, including commitment to values and principles of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Sound judgement in maintaining donor confidentiality
  • Results-oriented with demonstrated ability to track progress and meet goals, and actionoriented with a bias towards getting things done
  • Detail-oriented and organized; ability to manage, prioritize and complete multiple tasks and projects on-time, under tight deadlines; ability to handle stress and pressure effectively
  • Customer Service orientation: View your work as supporting team success by helping to make other team members’ work as easy and straightforward as possible
  • Well-versed in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Willing to work occasional overtime or irregular hours 


  • Additional 1-2 years of experience as administrative assistant or similar
  • Interest in fundraising and/or a career in the Development field
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Experience working with Salesforce or similar fundraising database 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as research skills
  • Understanding of civil rights, civil liberties and social justice, and commitment to supporting efforts to uphold them
