The NYCLU seeks an investigator who will have responsibility for investigating matters and gathering evidence in current or potential litigation and supporting local and statewide advocacy campaigns to advance and defend civil liberties. The successful candidate must be prepared to start between July 8 and July 15, 2019.
EXAMPLES OF PREVIOUS PROJECTS
Our investigator previously supported litigation challenging solitary-confinement practices, litigation challenging the inadequate funding of public-defender systems, litigation challenging the lack of bond hearings for immigrants under detention, litigation challenging the detention of immigrant children, and bail-reform litigation.
Under the direction and supervision of the Legal Department, the investigator will have the following responsibilities:
- Assist in developing and supporting litigation by investigating case matters, gathering evidence, doing non-legal background research and fact development, and presenting findings in memo form;
- Conduct fact-finding interviews with clients, potential clients and witnesses in service of furthering litigation;
- Draft summaries of interviews and maintain interview records, as well as draft affidavits and declarations based on such interviews;
- Develop and maintain relationships with existing and potential clients and witnesses, coalitions, grassroots groups, advocacy organizations, and government agencies;
- Assist in preparing clients and witnesses for upcoming testimony in a deposition, hearing, or trial or with interviews with media;
- Assist in drafting FOIA and FOIL requests and other written work product;
- Review FOIA, FOIL, and discovery documents in service of potential or ongoing litigation;
- Support and help develop state-wide investigations with Chapter Directors from around the state;
- As needed, will have opportunities to identify issues and develop independent projects.
- Bachelor’s Degree;
- Fluency in Spanish;
- Experience with client-centric work and conducting interviews;
- Excellent client engagement skills and the ability to communicate and relate to persons from a diversity of backgrounds;
- Excellent witness interview skills;
- Excellent research skills;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Comfortable interviewing alone in jails, prisons, and other carceral settings;
- Strong commitment to public interest advocacy and civil liberties;
- Ability to manage time and tasks independently and under pressure;
- Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines;
- Driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively within New York State; and
- A minimum 2-year commitment to the position.
Previous experience as an investigator, investigative journalist, or organizer is preferred, but not required. Broad experience with civil rights advocacy and client contact, including familiarity with the civil rights and advocacy organizations in New York, is preferred, but not required. A familiarity with the New York legal system is also preferred, but not required. Notary public license is a plus.
