The NYCLU seeks a staff attorney to conduct litigation and related advocacy in the NYCLU’s legal department. The staff attorney will work on the full range of NYCLU issues, including immigration, criminal justice, free expression, equal protection, LGBT issues, women’s rights, racial justice, police misconduct, due process, student rights, and privacy. The NYLCU is particularly interested in candidates with experience and expertise in immigration.

The NYCLU’s Legal Department is comprised of sixteen lawyers, an investigator, three paralegals, a data analyst, and a legal assistant. Legal Department staff work on a wide range of civil rights and civil liberties cases in federal and state courts and in administrative tribunals. They also support the legislative, advocacy, and communications work of the NYCLU.


  • Developing and conducting litigation in federal and state courts and in administrative forums.  Staff attorneys are responsible for identifying possible litigation and advocacy, preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs; conducting discovery; presenting oral arguments; and handling appeals;
  • Engaging in pre-litigation analysis and advocacy, including evaluating and following up on intakes; conducting factual investigations and legal analyses; utilizing the Freedom of Information Law; and drafting demand letters.
  • Participating in public education on civil liberties issues in the form of speaking engagements and published writings.


The ideal candidate for this position will have superlative writing and analytical skills; will have significant experience with federal, civil-rights litigation, including developing cases, conducting discovery, and participating in evidentiary proceedings and appeals; will have substantive expertise and litigation experience in immigration law or in education issues; will have experience in civil-rights advocacy beyond litigation; will bring a diversity of experience and perspective to the position; will have a record of successfully initiating reform efforts; will have a demonstrated ability to work well with a team; and will be fluent in Spanish.


  • Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills;
  • Three years of public-interest litigation experience;
  • A demonstrated ability to advocate effectively, including an ability to initiate and follow through on public-interest litigation or advocacy;
  • A demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of the NYCLU;
  • Leadership, self-motivation, and an ability to work collaboratively.
