The criminal charges against the Bronx Guild HS student arrested along with her principal and an aide on February 3, 2005 were resolved today when the case against the teen was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal.

Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the NYCLU, today issued the following statement:

"The NYCLU is pleased that the criminal cases have all been resolved without a single conviction. However, this does not resolve the ongoing problem of inadequately - and possibly improperly -- trained police officers in school. Police are not placed in schools to arrest students for mere infractions of school rules. Enforcement of school rules is a matter for school officials.

The NYCLU continues to receive complaints that school safety personnel usurp or ignore authority of school principals, thereby disrupting education.

We continue to call on the Department of Education and the NYPD to acknowledge and resolve these ongoing problems.
