The NYCLU today released comments on a proposed New York City law that seeks to prevent voyeuristic behavior in public and private places. The bill is being introduced today in the New York City Council.

The following can be attributed to NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“Peter Vallone's ‘Jeepers Creepers!’ bill is creepy lawmaking indeed. The proposed law seeks to address behavior that is often ambiguous and imprecise, and the language of the bill reflects that ambiguity and imprecision. This lack of clarity confers a license for abuse on those empowered to enforce the law by leaving it up to the individual police officer to decide which kinds of viewing are lawful and which kinds are degrading and hence unlawful.”
