NYCLU Announces A Major Development In The Case Of Five Girls Forced To Get Medical Exams At IS-164 In Washington Heights

The NYCLU will hold a news conference on Saturday, January 31st at 10.30am in its offices at 125 Broad Street on the 17th Floor concerning a major development in the case involving 5 students who were suspended from Intermediate School 164 in Washington Heights.

A federal lawsuit was filed by the NYCLU against school officials for illegally suspending a group of girls and refusing to let them return to school unless they underwent intrusive and highly private medical examinations and turned over the test results to IS 164.

In April 2003, the students allegedly attended a “hooky party” and it came to the attention of the school’s principal. The principal then demanded that as a condition of the girls’ return to school they submit to pregnancy, STD and HIV tests and that those tests results be submitted to the school.

An announcement will be made Saturday about a major, significant development in the case and its impact on students’ right to privacy.
