NYCLU Celebrates Connecticut Court’s Decision on Marriages of Lesbian and Gay Couples

Today’s historic Connecticut Supreme Court decision that lesbian and gay couples cannot be denied the right to marry in that state was applauded by New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman.

Today’s historic Connecticut Supreme Court decision that lesbian and gay couples cannot be denied the right to marry in that state was applauded by New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman.

Notably, the Connecticut court’s decision, just like the California Supreme Court decision in May, cites with approval the Hernandez v. Robles dissent of New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Judith Kaye: “Simply put, a history or tradition of discrimination – no matter how entrenched – does not make the discrimination constitutional. … [t]he government cannot legitimately justify discrimination against one group of persons as a mere desire to preference another group.”

The following can be attributed to Lieberman:

“While we commend the Connecticut Supreme Court on its just and fair decision, we know that lasting progress requires leadership from both the judicial and legislative branches. It’s time for New York’s political leaders to support the core American value of fairness. New Yorkers should not have to leave the state to protect their families.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
