NYCLU Commends Plan to Increase Minimum Wage to $15 for State Workers

New York State will gradually increase the minimum hourly wage for state workers to $15 an hour, Governor Cuomo announced on Tuesday through news reports, placing New York’s public employees far ahead of other states on minimum wage. Using executive authority, the governor will gradually increase the hourly rate: State workers in New York City are set to earn $15 an hour by the end of 2018, and state workers outside of New York City will see wages rise to $15 by an hour by the end of 2021.

The following comment is attributable to New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“Raising the minimum wage is an important, sensible and long overdue step toward making it possible for thousands of hardworking New Yorkers to support their families. New York State is making history in the fight for fair pay by gradually increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour for state workers, and our state should continue to set the standard for the rest of the country by establishing a $15 minimum wage for all workers.”
