The New York Civil Liberties Union enthusiastically supports the decision by the Mayor of New Paltz to marry gay couples.

In a state that has a long and proud heritage of recognizing equality and barring discrimination and that recently expanded its anti-discrimination laws to cover sexual orientation, it is long overdue for state officials to stop discriminating against gay and lesbian New Yorkers when it comes to marriage.

The NYCLU looks forward to taking whatever actions are necessary to protect the civil rights of New Yorkers regardless of their sexual orientation.
