NYCLU Questions DOE Limitations On Community Education Council Candidates
The New York Civil Liberties Union has written to the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to object to reported limitations on the questions that can be asked at forums that are to be held for candidates seeking election to the Community Education Councils. The DOE has reportedly promulgated a list of 6 questions that may be asked. In addition, organizations sponsoring candidate forums must:
- pre-register with the DOE and secure permission;
- hold a forum on one of three days chosen by the DOE; and
- bar questions from the audience.
Donna Lieberman , the Executive Director of the NYCLU, noted that "Whatever the wisdom of the DOE's decision to rigidly choreograph these public forums, the First Amendment does not allow it to censor the questions, prescribe the format or restrict the debate at independent forums which the DOE is required to accommodate in the schools."
The NYCLU has asked the DOE to provide a satisfactory explanation of the policy or to change it and will seek a meeting with the DOE.
