Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, joined Senate Democrats today as they called for all 10 points of the Women’s Equality Act to get voted on and passed by the New York State Senate. What follows are Lieberman’s comments:

“The NYCLU is in Albany today on behalf of our 50,000 members to call on the State Senate to do the right thing and stand for the women of New York State and pass each and every section of the Women’s Equality Act.

“It’s time for New York State law to catch up with the needs of women and reflect New Yorkers’ overwhelming support for the principles of fairness, dignity and equality for all women. Not just 50 percent of the time, or 60 percent of the time – but all the time, in every aspect of life. Wherever we work, wherever we live, and whatever medical care we need to protect our health.

“Let there be no mistake — Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and the law of our state. It protects our right to get the medical care we need to protect our health at every point in pregnancy. And it’s high time for the State Legislature to acknowledge that and take the vote necessary to stop keeping that a secret.

“Thank you Senator Stewart-Cousins and Senator Gianaris for standing with the women of New York – yesterday , today and tomorrow.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
