NYCLU Statement on NY Equal Rights Amendment

NEW YORK – Today Governor Cuomo announced a proposal to pass an inclusive Equal Rights Amendment that will expand protections against discrimination in the state constitution. The New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement from Executive Director, Donna Lieberman

“We welcome the Governor’s support for amending the Constitution of the State of New York to include an Equal Rights Amendment. A modern and inclusive ERA is a momentous opportunity to ensure that all New Yorkers are protected against discrimination—no matter who is in power. New York’s existing equal protection clause is over 80 years old and in dire need of an update so that it matches the values and laws of today’s New York. Voters should demand broad and inclusive anti-discrimination language—because we all need and deserve the constitution’s protection. It’s time for New York’s Constitution to have an inclusive and updated Equal Rights Amendment to truly secure equal rights for all New Yorkers.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
