In response to the overnight eviction of Occupy Syracuse demonstrators from Perseverance Park, the New York Civil Liberties Union today issued the following statement attributable to Central New York Chapter Director Barrie Gewanter:

“The unnecessary eviction of protesters from Perseverance Park is an affront to free speech. We’re disappointed that Mayor Miner declined repeated requests to meet with demonstrators to find a solution that resolves any public safety concerns and respects free speech. For several months, the city had set a good example by accommodating the protest. It’s a shame to have spoiled that good work by raiding the park in middle of the night and arresting peaceful demonstrators.”

In a letter sent on Tuesday, the NYCLU had urged Mayor Stephanie Miner to halt plans to evict the Occupy encampment and resolve any issues through discussion with the demonstrators. Miner did not respond to the letter, nor did her office return the NYCLU’s phone calls, before launching the eviction.

Miner moved ahead with the eviction despite the fact that Fire Department inspectors on Wednesday found no immediate safety concerns in the encampment.

According to press reports, police arrested seven protesters on charges of erecting temporary structures without a permit.

“The city had allowed the demonstrators to use tents for months without requiring permit,” Gewanter said. “To suddenly arrest them in the dead of night for having tents is unjust.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
