President Donald Trump today signed an executive order that would allow religious organizations to endorse political candidates and expand participation in politics, as well as allow private employers to use religion as a pretext to deny reproductive health care to their employees.

The following is attributable to Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union:

“The president’s executive order is fundamentally at odds with separation of church and state, one of the bedrock principles of our democracy. It is a thinly veiled effort to privilege religious views in the electoral process and to encourage employers to use religion as a pretext to deny women the care they need. Access to contraception and other reproductive health care is necessary for any American women to have equal participation in society – it’s not a decision that should be driven by the religious preferences of her boss.”
