Desk Arrest Stirs Protest
In February, 12-year-old Alexa Gonzalez doodled on her desk in social studies class at her junior high school in Forest Hills: "Lexi was here 2/1/10" and "I Love my babis, Abby & Faith." … New York City public schools have 5,200 uniformed members of the NYPD's School Safety Division, double the amount of guidance counselors in the school system, said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, but aren't required to report any of the division's activity. Ms. Lieberman said the data will allow the City Council to ensure that discipline is being administered equitably throughout the school system.
