This town, population 1,700, has no schools, no post office and no churches. And now, at town meetings, it has no Spanish, no Chinese, no Arabic…But Jackson's ordinance has drawn some attention among people who have to use a Google map to figure out where it is located. The New York Civil Liberties Union already has warned the town to take its new English-only policy off the books in the next few weeks or risk being reported to the U.S. Department of Justice for violations of protected free speech. In a letter to the town, the NYCLU also warns that the town could face lawsuits. There are no other New York towns with a similar law because Jackson's new ordinance is unconstitutional, said Melanie Trimble, director of the NYCLU's Capital Region Chapter. She said there is no reason to pass such an ordinance other than to alienate and discriminate. She said it will keep people with limited English skills from conducting town business.
