NYCLU Questions Data Collection By Feds
The New York Civil Liberties Union says it's wary of the way federal officials gather data on race. The NYCLU is seeking records on the Federal Bureau Investigation's statewide collection of racial and ethnicity data. The group says the practice invites unconstitutional racial profiling by law enforcement. "And it's the position of the NY Civil Liberties Union that racial; profiling was unconstitutional before 9/11 and it's unconstitutional after 9/11. So what we're trying to make sure is that this program that were worried about is part of the larger Bush era practice of engaging in racial profiling in the name of protecting national security," said NYCLU Director of Advocacy Udi Ofer.
