Big Brother will be watching from more places. In his State of the City address Monday, Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy touted the virtues of surveillance cameras. More of them are on the way, as well as cameras that catch drivers who run red lights…The New York Civil Liberties Union doesn't oppose Rochester's street surveillance camera program, but there is worry about adding more cameras. “They could just start putting them up everywhere, and for no really known purpose,” said Gary Pudup, executive director of the Genesee Valley Chapter of NYCLU. “This is the kind of mission creep thing that we worry about, that it comes to a point where whenever you come to the city, you're being watched." Pudup said NYCLU is concerned about red light cameras. Civil liberties advocates are opposed to using the cameras as a revenue tool. Moore said their purpose is to improve safety at busy intersections.
