Town’s English-only law may not go to public vote
The voters may not get to decide. A measure to place the town's English-only law on the November ballot may not be permissible by law, said Town Supervisor Alan Brown...The NYCLU is opposed to both of the town's English-only laws, as well as any attempt by the town to place the proposal on a ballot. "We advise the town to not even bother constructing a referendum at taxpayers' cost because it does not insulate the town from a legal challenge, and it's still unconstitutional," Melanie Trimble, Capital Region Chapter director of the NYCLU, said on Thursday. "We're calling upon them to drop (the proposed law) and to rescind (the initial ordinance)."
