The New York Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union Foundation are both not-for-profit organizations exempt from federal income taxes, under Section 501(c )(4) and a 501(c )(3) respectively, of the Internal Revenue Code. Do the NYCLU and ACLU share my mailing address with other organizations?

The NYCLU operates under the ACLU’s privacy policy regarding mailing list exchanges. The ACLU is pledged by its policy and practice to protect the privacy of our members' association with the ACLU. To implement that pledge, we take extraordinary steps to limit access to our list and to set conditions upon such access that insure our members' associational privacy rights. In general, ACLU policy bars access to outside parties. The only exception to this bar allows us to provide one-time access, on either a rental or exchange basis, to certain organizations or periodicals in order for us to be able to gain access to their lists for the purposes of recruiting new ACLU members. Such access, of course, never includes physical custody. We are also barred from providing access to ACLU members for partisan electoral purposes, e.g., to a political candidate or party.
