New York’s criminal justice system ensnares thousands of people each year. Police make arrests for minor misbehavior, officer misconduct goes unpunished, and people spend months behind bars awaiting trial.

Reproductive Rights

The Reproductive Rights program of the New York Civil Liberties Union (RRP) is the only New York State-based legal organization that focuses on reproductive rights.

Racial Justice

The New York Civil Liberties Union aims to preserve and extend constitutionally guaranteed rights to people who have historically been denied their rights on the basis of race.

LGBT Rights

Every New Yorker deserves the same rights and protections under the law. The NYCLU is a leader in protecting and fighting for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The New York Civil Liberties Union has been a leader in the fight to level the playing field and break down barriers to women’s equality.

The Education Policy Center

What used to be a trip to the principal’s office for minor misbehavior has become for many students in New York a trip to the police precinct — complete with handcuffs, jail cells and an appearance in court.

Freedom of Speech and Religion

The freedom of expression, the freedom of the press, and the freedom of religion -- supported by the strict separation of church and state -- are protected by the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and are guaranteed to all Americans.

Rights of People with Disabilities

In 1972 the NYCLU filed a historic civil rights lawsuit to challenge the inhumane institutional conditions suffered by the residents of the infamous Willowbrook State School.

Liberty and Security

Throughout U.S. history, “national security” has often been used as a pretext for massive violations of individual rights. In the past decade, the fight against terrorism has served as the pretext for serious attacks on civil liberties in New York State and nationwide.
